Origins of the Symbol
The Horn of Plenty is a symbol of prosperity and abundance originating around the 5th century BC. In Greek mythology, Amalthea nourished the mighty god Zeus with the milk of a goat. In requital for her loving care, Zeus gave her one of the goat´s horns bestowing upon it the magical power of filling itself with whatever its owner might desire. He entrusted the horn to Amalthea promising her that it would bring to her plenty of each and every thing that she might wish for or aspire to.
That is why the horn became a symbol of plenty and is also known as “Amalthea´s Horn”. Hence arose the legend of the Horn of Plenty. Certain deities such as the Goddess Fortune are usually depicted with the Horn of Plenty.
